2003 E39 M5
The 2003 e39 m5 is the last year for this model before the e60 version was introduced. The 2003 year cars are a special year because it signifies a big change for the M5 cars - they became more technical, lost their manual transmission in favor of the SMG gearbox and the sheet metal became less muscular and even more refined.
All in, there were just over twenty thousand e39 M5's built in this production run from 1999 to 2003.
Even though the car was introduced in 1998, production didn't begin until almost the end of that year, when means that the e39 technically is a five year production run.
A 2003 e39 M5 was largely unchanged from the prior two years with most of the M Power divisions resources likely going into developing its successor.
Some have argued that the power assisted recirculating ball steering is overkill for a performance car, yet those who say this forget that most people who drive the e39 m5 do so as daily drivers and probably appreciate this feature.
The aluminum block 4.9 litre V8 known as the "S62" powered the e39 M5 in its final year. Some say this engine is the best that BMW every built as most owners report almost no major issues. This is also validated by the consumer reports publications. All of the M62 engines use a technology called Alusil which is a high temperature resistant silicon applied onto the cylinder walls, effectively creating a ball-bearing like surface for the pistons - pure race bred, cutting edge techno for the e39 M5.
Yet, most will never appreciate all that goes into any of the M5 cars, even after years of owning them.
The radio/ nav package was updated with better graphics and software in 2003, in addition to further improvements with the M Audio system - specifically better bass response with bigger speakers.
In 2002 and 2003 there were two new exterior colors added to the production line, of which one was Oxford Green.
Improved solar sensing for temperature control and a better emergency repair tire kit are also included in later 2002 and 2003 e39 m5's.
Unrestricted, the E39 M5 will reach a top speed of 180 miles per hour.
Buying any model year, including the 2003 BMW m5 is a terrific idea because these cars exude value in every way. While they're not cheap to maintain, they cost less per mile that comparable marques and offer more fun per dollar as well.
In addition, it's easy to find a BMW service center just about anywhere in major centers.
